چکیده

IN THIS PAPER the discovery in Japan of smaller Foraminifera from the Upper Cretaceous strata is recorded for the firsi: time. This contribution, in addition to its specific biostratigraphic application in Japan, has further interest by reason of its extension of the geo. graphic range ,of the widely distributed Cretaceous pelagic foraminiferan, Globotruncana. In the north Pacific region, Globotrun cana has heretofore been known only from the East Indian archipelago and from California. This paper forms part of a project initiated by the Natural Resources Section, General Headquarters, Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, for the purpose of assembling paleontologic data applicable to solution of stratigraphic problems connected with exploration for oil and coal in Japan. In the course of the geological survey connected with oil exploration in the Cretaceous areas of Hokkaido, Mr. S. Iijima of the Geological Survey of Japan collected samples in 1947 from the Upper Cretaceous rocks in the vicinity of Nakagawa-mura , Nakagawa-gun , Teshio district, Hokkaido, which, on examination, proved to contain a few specimens of Globotruncana. This identification was confirmed by Dr. Paul P. Goudkoff of Los Angeles, California, in a letter dated April 29, 1948. He identified Globotrun cana canaliClilata' (Reuss) and species of Gyroidina and Pleurostomella in the sample. Subsequent study at Tohoku University of additional rock samples from the Upper Cretaceous of Hokkaido has revealed that although the occurrence of Globotruncana seems to ,be rare in the Absehinai

Biostratigraphy of the Gurpi Formation in Sepidan section, Interior Fars basin based on planktonic foraminifera

In this study biostratigraphy of the Upper Cretaceous deposits (Gurpi Formation) in Sepidan section located in the Interior Fars basin (SW Iran) was studied. The Gurpi Formation in this section consists of 360 m lime shale, argillaceous limestone and shale laid continuously on the Ilam Formation and with a paraconformity under the Pabdeh Formation. Nine genera and 27 species of planktonic foram...

Microbiostratigraphy of the Lower Cretaceous strata from South East of Maragheh, NW Iran

For the microbiostratigraphical studies, a stratigraphical section (named Dareh-Goshayesh) has been selected in southeast of Maragheh, Northwestern Iran. The thickness of successions in the selected stratigraphic section is measured about 223.6 m. The mentioned studied stratigraphic section is composed of two clastic and carbonate units. This succession unconformably overlies the Lar Formation ...

Upper Cretaceous planktic foraminiferal from the Zagros basin (north-northwest Shiraz), Iran

The litho-and biostratigraphy of Upper Cretaceous (Gurpi Formation) has been investigated within a well-exposed section at the northern limb of Pey zard anticline, Abnow area, Southern Iran. The studied section consists mainly of grey marl, calcareous pyritic shale, and argillaceous limestones. The Formation unconformably overlies Sarvak Formation and the Tarbur Formation overlies it unconforma...

Mesorbitolina (Cretaceous larger foraminifera) from the Yezo Group in Hokkaido, Japan and its stratigraphic and paleobiogeographic significance

In this paper, we describe an Aptian (Early Cretaceous) larger foraminiferal species Orbitolina (Mesorbitolina) parva from the limestone olistoliths in the lower part of the Yezo Group in the Yubari-Ashibetsu area, central Hokkaido and from limestone pebbles in the lowermost part of the Yezo Group in the Nakagawa area, northern Hokkaido. This is the first report of this species from the circum-...

Benthic foraminiferal turnover across the Cretaceous/ Paleogene boundary at Agost (southeastern Spain): paleoenvironmental inferences

We studied Upper Cretaceous and Lower Paleogene benthic foraminifera from the Agost section (southeastern Spain) to infer paleobathymetrical changes and paleoenvironmental turnover across the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/P) transition. Benthic foraminifera indicate uppermost bathyal depths at Agost during the Abathomphalus mayaroensis Biochron (from about 400 kyr before the K/P boundary) through the...
